How to spend a long weekend in Cambridge, Maryland

Cambridge is a working waterfront town of about twelve thousand on the Choptank, roughly ninety minutes from Baltimore, Washington and Philadelphia. It has a brewery in an old fire station, a serious Harriet Tubman history, and one of the largest tidal marshes on the coast just south of it.

Three days is enough to do it well. Here’s a plan that doesn’t wear anyone out.

Friday — arrive and don’t leave

Stop for groceries and crabs on Route 50 on the way in. Do not skip this; once you’re down the driveway you will not want to drive back out.

Get to the house, drop bags, and swim or take the dock before dinner depending on the season. Steam the crabs, eat outside, build a fire when it gets dark. That’s the whole evening. Nothing else is scheduled on purpose.

Saturday — the marsh, then the town

Morning. Up early for the refuge. Do the Wildlife Drive with binoculars and coffee, walk the Marsh Edge Trail, and be back at the house by eleven with the whole day still ahead of you.

Midday. Pool, dock, hammock, whichever applies. Lunch at the house.

Afternoon. Into Cambridge. Long Wharf, the lighthouse at the end of the pier, and a wander through downtown — it’s small enough to cover on foot and has more going on than it looks like from the highway.

Evening. RAR Brewing for dinner and a flight, then back before it gets fully dark so you get the drive in under stars.

Sunday — history, then water

Morning. The Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad Visitor Center, fifteen minutes from the house. Tubman was born enslaved in this county and escaped through this exact landscape — the marsh you’ve been looking at all weekend. The center is free, it’s excellent, and it reframes everything else you’ll see here. Give it two hours.

Afternoon. Kayaks from the lawn. By day three you know the river well enough to just go.

Evening. Grill at the house. Pool table tournament. Someone will still be playing at midnight.

Monday — the long way out

If you can push checkout, drive south to Hoopers Island first. It’s forty minutes down a thin road with open water on both sides, past working crab houses and not much else. It is the most Chesapeake thing in the county and a good last look before Route 50.

If you have a fourth day

Add Hoopers Island as its own afternoon, paddle the Transquaking, or drive to St. Michaels for a very different, considerably more polished version of the Eastern Shore. Cambridge is the one people end up preferring.
